The model, who launched her very own skincare line called ‘Rhode’ — her middle name — on June 5, is already facing a legal issue. Clothing brand RHODE is suing Justin Bieber’s wife for copyright infringement. PEOPLE obtained documents filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, which describe the suit by RHODE cofounders Purna Khatau and Phoebe Vickers, who started their business in 2013.  According to the lawsuit, Khatau and Vickers saw “confusion in the marketplace” between their brand and Bieber’s shortly after the skincare line’s launch. Instagram is a clear example of the confusion, with the clothing brand alleging that the username @rhode was initially promised to them before “Instagram decided to allow Ms. Bieber to use it.”  The clothing brand’s Instagram handle is @shoprhode, but according to the documents, many people are tagging @rhode instead, creating confusion and hindering Khatau and Vickers’ brand recognition. Khatau and Vickers’ lawsuit also states that Bieber attempted to buy the brand from them around four years ago, but they declined. While Bieber’s company is currently only focused on skincare, the cofounders said, “Hailey has stated that she wants to pursue a clothing line, and she even applied for ‘rhode’ as a trademark for clothing.”  The owners of RHODE made it clear that it’s not the competition in the clothing marketplace that they care about, but they don’t want someone else using their name. They are asking for a preliminary injunction that would order Bieber to stop using the name “Rhode” for her brand. PEOPLE also shared a statement from RHODE’s lawyer, Lisa T. Simpson, who said: “We, of course, understand that Hailey wants to use her middle name for her brand, but the law on this is clear: you can’t create this kind of brand confusion just because you want to use your name. What Ms. Bieber is doing is harming a minority co-owned business that two women have painstakingly built into a growing, global brand.” RHODE, which is nearing the 10 year mark, began as a small company but grew “through much personal sacrifice and hardship,” as described by Khatau and Vickers. The brand is now worn by celebrities like Khloe Kardashian, Beyoncé, Jamie Chung and Rihanna. It’s sold in luxury stores like Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.  The company also announced the lawsuit on Instagram, writing in a statement that they really “didn’t want to file this lawsuit, but we had to in order to protect our business…Her using our brand is hurting our company, our employees, our customers, and our partners.” They concluded: “We’re confident in the lawsuit’s outcome, but we hope Hailey will now understand the harm we’re sure she never meant to cause and change her skin-care line’s brand.” Next, Justin Bieber’s Wife Hailey Offers Important Update After His Ramsay Hunt Syndrome Diagnosis
