So if you’ve heard the recent hype, but still don’t really get what the Human Design Personality Typing system is exactly or what each of the four Human Design Personality Types—Manifestor, Generator, Projector or Reflector—mean, this primer can help.
What is the HumanDesign Personality Typing System?
“Human Design is a new system of understanding individual human energy,” explains Human Design expert Annabelle Blythe, founder of @w.i.l.d.h.o.m.e. “It combines astrology with the chakra system, the I Ching and the Kabbalah to create a blueprint of how you are uniquely designed to use your energy and make decisions.” The Human Design Personality Typing System begins with your HumanDesign Chart (also called a BodyGraph), which is calculated using your birth date, time, and place, to reveal your so-called “genetic design.” According to Blythe, this chart “shows you what your gifts are and how to make decisions in the most aligned way possible.” Fans love it is because this information is supposed to be able to help you to make decisions that are most in line with who you are. “It sheds light on your emotional, psychological and energetic make-up, giving you the self-awareness and tools to align with your nature and step into your highest potential in every area of your life—your career, partnership and relationships,” says Human Design leadership coach, Erin Claire Jones. “It equips us with tools to move out of resistance and into flow in our lives.” In short: “Human Design is not about changing who we are; it’s about giving us permission to be who we’ve always been,” Jones says. So how does it work? The HumanDesign Personality Typing System provides two main sets of tools called Strategy and Authority. Your personalized BodyGraph is supposed to show you what your unique Strategy and Authority is. Ultimately, proponents use this personality type information to lead them in the life direction that’s right for them based on this genetic design. “In Human Design there are five different energy types,” Blythe says—Manifestors, Generators, Manifesting Generators, Projectors, and Reflectors. “Your energy type tells you how you are here to exchange energy with the world around you. It’s the umbrella under which the rest of your chart falls.”
All About the Manifestor Personality Type
According to Blythe, “Manifestors are the initiators of the Human Design types, and one of the rarest. They run off of surges of energy, and are meant to go after their spontaneous urges to do or create something.” Manifestors, like their namesake, are great at manifesting action: “They are not here to follow someone else’s path, or to be told what to do. They are here to lead, not follow. They are here to start things to bring people in along the way,” Blythe explains. Ultimately, “They are here to show us what’s possible when you move away from trying to please everyone and are unapologetic about who you are.” Gifts: “They are here to be trailblazers and get things started—not necessarily to do all the doing, but to bring new ideas to life,” Jones explains. “They are naturally innovative and thrive when they do things on their terms, in their way.” Challenges: When Manifestors don’t trust their power, they can run into trouble by “waiting for things to come to them, rather than trusting themselves to initiate.” They also struggle with “getting lost in all the ‘doing,’ rather than trusting their gift of initiating.”

All About the Generator Personality Type
While Manifestors are the initiators, Generators are the responders. “Generators are here to go after what makes them feel alive, discerning between what is a ‘yes’ or a ’no’ in their bodies. They get more energy in their bodies when they are doing something that’s in alignment for them,” Blythe explains. Among their strengths, Generators “have consistent access to productivity and creativity energy and can work for long days if they love what they are doing.” To find happiness, Blythe says, “They are meant to go after what gives them energy, and move away from what feels draining. They are here to show all the other types that life is meant to be light, and that ease is the way.” Gifts: “Generators are pure life force and natural doers,” Jones says. “They are steadfast and masterful creators and are gifted at bringing ideas to life. When they are lit up by what they are doing, their energy is magnetic and lifts us all up.” Challenges: “Letting others take advantage of their powerful energy and not trusting their desires to guide the way” can be a struggle for Generators, Jones says. All About the Manifesting Generator Personality Type
If this sounds like a two-for-one personality type, that’s because it is! “Manifesting Generators are a hybrid of the Manifestor and Generator energy types,” Blythe says. “Their energy works in the most nonlinear way, and they are here to be multi-passionate with incredibly diverse interests.” On the upside, “They have the most access to energy and can learn incredibly quickly,” she says, but on the downside, “they can also get bored incredibly quickly.” That’s why it’s important for Manifesting Generators to not dive completely into their initial excitement for things, but to wait and see if their interest is sustained over time, Blythe says. To sustain happiness, “If something no longer makes them feel alive, they need to give themselves permission to change their approach. They are here to show all the other types that life isn’t so linear, and you don’t need to put yourself in a box in order to be successful,” she says. Gifts: “Manifesting Generators are multi-passionate creators gifted at bringing ideas to life quickly and having their energy in many things at once,” says Jones. “When they are lit up and satisfied by how they’re using their energy, they lift us all up with their energy.” Challenges: When Manifesting Generators try to stick with something for too long, don’t give themselves permission to pivot or don’t trust their desires to guide the way, it can throw them out of their natural flow, says Jones. All About the Projector Personality Type
“Projectors are the visionaries of the Human Design types,” Blythe says. This Human Design personality type is different than the rest. “They are ’non-energy beings.’ While they don’t have consistent access to the same productivity or initiator energy as Manifestors, Generators or Manifesting Generators, they can be incredibly wise about these energies. They are here to show us that there’s a better or more efficient way of doing or creating something.” Among their trademark strengths, “Projectors have an ability to see things clearly in a way the other types can’t, and can be incredible guides,” Blythe says. “Their energy is really about trusting their unique gifts while allowing the world to show up. Gifts: “Projectors are natural guides, leaders and teachers,” Jones says. “They have an innate knowing around how others can best leverage their gifts and potential. They are here to show us a new way of success, one that is about working smarter, not harder.” Challenges: Projector personality types might have trouble reigning things in, since they’re prone to overworking and trying to be doers, Jones says. All About the Reflector Personality Type
“Reflectors are the rarest of the energy types, making up about 1% of the population,” Blythe says. As their name suggests, “All of their energy centers are undefined, meaning they take in and mirror the energy that is around them. They are often described as the ‘canaries in the coalmine’ as they are products of their environment,” she explains. This receptivity gives them an incredible capacity for wisdom, says Blythe: “With such a unique nature, reflectors are not here to be like everyone else or define who they are. They are here to show the rest of us that it’s a myth that you need to decide who you are, and when you stay open you can be surprised and delighted by what life brings you.” Gifts: “Reflectors are deeply wise and offer a powerful, objective assessment of any environment they’re in. They are the ultimate chameleons and can tap into and experience many ways of being,” Jones says. Challenges: “Not honoring the ebbs and flows of their energy and overworking,” Jones tells us.
