After a three-year wait, fans can find out the answers to those questions: Russian Doll Season 2 dropped in its entirety on Wednesday, April 20, 2022. To give everyone a chance to absorb all seven episodes of the new season, we’re not going to spoil what happens—but we can say that it involves time travel that affects both Nadia and Alan, achieved via a portal on the 6 train, with one stop being the East Village in the 1980s. We can also give some insight on whether there will be a third season, and what it might entail. Read on for what we know about Russian Doll Season 3!

Has Russian Doll been renewed for Season 3?

On the day of Russian Doll’s Season 2 debut, there was no word yet on whether the series will be returning for a Season 3. Lyonne originally pitched the show to Netflix as a three-season arc, and as the first season aired, she told The Hollywood Reporter that that was still the plan, telling the outlet, “I see it quite concretely, and it will be interesting to see what evolves.” She discussed how the character of Alan changed from the pitch to the first episode and how that experience opens up numerous possibilities for the series’ direction. “Before then, he had been a whole variety of other figures and now, looking back, imagining that show without Alan is almost impossible," she explained. “Because of that experience, I know there has to be space left open for something beyond my limited imagination in this moment to know if that is still where the series begins, middles and ends. Maybe it’s only two seasons. Maybe it’s four seasons. Right now, it feels quite clearly that it is those three.” The first season of Russian Doll premiered on February 1, 2019, and the announcement that the series had been renewed for a second season came in June of that year, so it’s possible we could be waiting a few months for an official announcement about Season 3.

When will Russian Doll Season 3 premiere?

While the gap between the renewal announcement and premiere of Season 2 was almost three full years, Russian Doll experienced the same COVID-19 delays as so many other productions; Season 2 filming had been set to begin in March 2020 but was delayed a year. If the show is renewed for a third season, we can hope that circumstances allow the production to run smoothly and set a more timely release date.

Is there a Russian Doll Season 3 trailer?

No Season 3 trailer yet (at least, not in our current timeline), as the show has yet to be officially renewed. Check back for updates!

Who will be in the Russian Doll Season 3 cast?

Russian Doll Season 2 saw Lyonne and Barnett return to their roles as Nadia and Alan, as well as Greta Lee and RebeccaHenderson as Nadia’s friends Maxine and Lizzy. Elizabeth Ashley also returned as Nadia’s godmother Ruth. Season 2 included a few new actors, notably Schitt’s Creek star Annie Murphy. Based on this, it’s safe to assume that Season 3 will carry forward the primary characters and throw a few new ones into the mix.

What will Russian Doll Season 3 be about?

Season 1 of Russian Doll was a cerebral, video game-esque time loop rhapsody; Season 2 involved time travel with a healthy dose of multiverse action. It’s anyone’s guess what mind-bending time trope Season 3 will delve into, but our general sense is that whatever happens to Nadia and Alan will prompt them to further explore connections to their past and to each other.
