Is Deja pregnant on This Is Us?
We all knew based on the episode’s trailer that “Heart and Soul” would include an explosive dinnertime revelation from Déjà and Malik, but Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) don’t have the luxury of promos to tip them off, so they’re just now learning about this. Worried about why their daughter’s boyfriend has decided to cook them dinner, the pair plays a round of worst-case-scenario, coming up with the following explanations for the dinner: Déjà is pregnant; Déjà and Malik eloped; Malik is planning to propose; Déjà wants to adopt Malik’s daughter and move in with them forever. Since they considered all of these in advance, we can probably safely assume none of them will be correct. Before the dinner, Déjà seeks advice from her sisters on whatever she and Malik are preparing to tell their parents, right before dessert. Tess anticipates their parents are going to “kill [her].” Uh-oh. Malik’s homemade dinner turns out to be gnocchi in brown butter sauce, salad, and bread, with a generous side portion of awkwardness. But the gnocchi isn’t the only thing that gets thoroughly buttered up at dinner: Malik kicks off the conversation by apologizing for Déjà’s weekend in Boston, before Tess (Eris Baker) jumps in to ask about Beth’s dance studio and Annie (Faithe Herman) offers to tell knock-knock jokes. Nice try kids, but this is not Beth and Randall’s first rodeo; they know when they’re being managed, and Beth demands that Déjà and Malik come clean with whatever it is. And then the bomb drops. The good news (at least if you’re Randall and Beth) is that Déjà’s not pregnant. The bad news? Déjà announces that she’ll be finishing up the school semester the following month, then moving to Boston with Malik.
Do Deja and Malik break up on This Is Us?
No amount of Déjà and Malik’s (obviously) carefully prepared arguments about A.P. credits and Harvard course offerings has any effect on Hurricane Randall, who listens only briefly about why they’re planning to move in together before storming outside. Later, as Malik is on his way out, he stops to talk to Randall on the porch, where Randall attempts to convince him to break up with Déjà, for her own good. Malik refuses, but tells Randall he’ll keep the conversation between the two of them, also for Déjà’s own good. (Something tells us that when Déjà finds out about all the things that are being done for her own good, she’s going to have some opinions about that.) Not dissuaded from his course, Randall tells Beth they need to be firm about not letting Déjà’s life veer off its current track, but Beth pushes back, saying he doesn’t understand how dangerous their position is. She compares Déjà and Malik to the two of them at that age (by our count, that’s twice this season Déjà and Malik have been compared to a young Beth and Randall— foreshadowing?) and says Randall is making a mistake that is going to cause them to lose their daughter. Fortunately, in the flash-forwards, we already know that Déjà eventually winds up on good terms with her parents, but it seems like it may be a rocky road to get there. What we know right now, though, is that she and Malik are on quite solid ground, so we’re predicting that they won’t break up between now and the Season 6 finale.
Who does Kevin end up with on This Is Us?
Clearly irritated about Madison’s burgeoning new relationship with Elijah, but trying his best not to show it (or, maybe not, considering that Kevin is a professional actor yet does a terrible job of covering up his annoyance), Kein calls Cassidy (Jennifer Morrison) and invites her to spend the weekend with hi mat the cabin he’s building for his mother. He also mentions that Nicky (Griffin Dunne) and his new girlfriend Edie (Vanessa Bell Calloway) will be joining them, verifying that Nicky must not have wasted any time after that fateful flight back east. Cassidy asks bluntly, “Is this a sex thing?” And after hemming and hawing a little too much, Kevin agrees that sure, it could be. Kevin then calls Randall, telling him his weekend plans, which Randall informs him are completely unrealistic if Kevin thinks he can have a no-strings-attached fling with Cassidy. “Try not to propose, you know how you get,” Randall tells him. Harsh, but probably fair. At the cabin, we learn that Edie has been married three times, has two kids, and hates The Manny. We love her already. Meanwhile, Kevin asks Cassidy if she’ll oversee construction of the cabin with Nicky, because he threw a stapler at the contractor and needs some supervision. She says she’ll think about it, but hopefully she’ll say yes, since that would mean we’d get to see her more often. But later, when Kevin tries to hold Cassidy’s hand while getting ice cream, she pulls away, saying that agreeing to weekend sex did not mean she was agreeing to a relationship with him. Unlike Kevin, Cassidy is well aware of her own healthy boundaries. “Your inner darkness is not the same as mine,” she says, telling him that it’s not realistic to pursue a relationship between them. Besides, “You are pursuing the wrong blonde in the wrong city,” she says, urging him to “go make things right with her.” But, which “her” does she mean: Madison or Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge)? Turns out, Kevin doesn’t even know, which Cassidy tells him just illustrates the problem, saying he has a habit of blowing up women’s lives. “I’m too messed up already,” Cassidy says. “Leave me in peace.” Seems like a pretty definitive “no,” or at least as definitive as this show tends to get, bringing us back to two main candidates for Kevin’s future bride.
Does Kevin marry Madison on This Is Us?
Barely any time passes before Kevin sends a late-night “u up?” text to… Elijah! Not who we were expecting! Elijah then calls him back, ignoring all the rules of polite society. It turns out Kevin wanted to give Elijah some advice on Madison: specifically, to get her smoothies without asking (early in the episode, Kevin watched her turn down Elijah’s offer of a smoothie), because asking makes things complicated because of her history of disordered eating. Did Elijah know that about Madison’s past? Did Kevin just accidentally pass along sensitive information that wasn’t his to share? Is this meant to show that Kevin is actually moving on from Madison, or just that he loves her so much that he’s being masochistically selfless? Hard to tell at this point, but given how much we’ve seen Madison and how little we’ve seen Sophie lately, and especially with all of the wounded puppy dog looks Kevin’s been directing her way since he moved out, it feels like she’s still the frontrunner for future Mrs. Pearson status.
How do Rebecca and Miguel get together on This Is Us?
Back in the late ’90s, 18-year-old Kate is not impressed with Rebecca and Miguel’s apparent nightly ritual of watching Who Wants to Be a Millionaire on the couch. After trying to prove to each other that they are, in fact, fun (spoiler: they are not), Miguel suggests they try speed dating, telling Rebecca, “You can’t just sit here with me every night for the rest of your life.” (YES SHE CAN, but they don’t know that yet.) Later, at speed dating, Miguel asks Rebecca’s opinion on a fedora, which she thankfully vetoes by saying, “You have great hair; I really like your curls.” Rebecca then asks for his opinion on her lipstick, which he says is, “very nice,” prompting her to immediately take it off. Knowing where these two wind up, it is exceedingly obvious that they should just skip this event and go to dinner already, but on This Is Us, we never take the direct path to get anywhere. Rebecca spends all of her speed dates talking about Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and how he died, sending each potential partner running for the hills. When the rotation lands Miguel across from her, he admits he’s not doing great either (but is he doing as badly as Rebecca? Surely not.), and suggests leaving if the next one is a dud. Yes, go do that! Go fall in love with each other already! Unfortunately for everyone, but especially Miguel, the next one is… Matt (Matt Corboy), the PTA dad who previously asked Rebecca out in a hardware store before she was ready to date. They seem to hit it off, and Matt asks her out for coffee, right in front of her next date who “likes [her] vibe” and has a ferret! Clearly a hard choice, but Rebecca says yes, while Miguel looks on with a brave smile. However, when Rebecca returns home from her date with Matt (ending in a hug and a quick peck on the cheek), Kate sees and gets upset, escalating things until she accuses her mother of “running around town like a slut,” and Rebecca slaps her across the face. Maybe neither of these two are completely ready for Rebecca to date yet? After Kate heads to her room, Rebecca calls Miguel to vent about her argument with Kate, showing he’s still the one she leans on for support, even if he’s not the one who took her for coffee after speed dating. She breaks down on the phone, which Kate overhears. Later, Kate and Rebecca both apologize for their actions, and although Rebecca says she won’t date anymore, Kate says she should. We just hope that the next guy is Miguel.
What happens next on This Is Us?
This is Us will be taking a few weeks off for the Winter Olympics, and will return with episode 6, titled “Our Little Island Girl: Part Two,” on Tuesday, Feb. 22nd at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The official synopsis reads, “Beth prepares her dancers for the first big dance recital at her new job.” “Our Little Island Girl” was the thirteenth episode of Season 3 of This Is Us, and was a Beth-centric episode that focused on her history as a committed dancer. The episode also explored Beth’s complicated relationship with her mother (Phylicia Rashad), whose approval Beth always felt she had to earn through hard work and constantly being exceptional. It ended with Beth deciding to walk away from her high-powered career to open up a dance studio, a decision her mother was not a fan of, but understood. However, at the end of Season 5, Beth was forced to close the studio, a casualty of the coronavirus pandemic. “Our Little Island Girl: Part Two,” which was co-written by Watson and Eboni Freeman, will feature both flashbacks and flash-forwards, according to an interview Watson gave to TVLine. She says that while she doesn’t dance in the episode (“I do one little turn.”), Beth will “pass the torch.” Of course, with Beth’s studio closed, the recital she’s preparing for will likely be with the dance conservatory she joined in Season 5, after Rebecca encouraged her to go change the system that ruined dance for Beth as a teenager. Since the first “Our Little Island Girl” was devoted entirely to Beth, we expect “Part Two” will be too, meaning we’ll probably have to wait to catch up with the Kate and Kevin-centric portions of the family tree. However, we will probably get to see some of the fallout from Déjà and Malik’s dinnertime bombshell—possibly drawing ties between Déjà and Beth, and Beth’s own relationship with her challenging mother—which will only add to the drama of Beth’s recital.
