The British monarch will be crowned at London’s Westminster Abbey on Saturday, May 6, 2023, the same day that the Sussexes’ son turns four years old. It has not yet been revealed if the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be in attendance. The couple, who stepped down as working members of the royal family in 2020, reside in California with their son Archie and daughter Lilibet Diana. Following the release of the first three episodes of Netflix’s Harry & Meghan, The Mail on Sunday reported that David Mellor, a former cabinet member, said the Duke and Duchess of Sussex should not attend Charles’ coronation. “They shouldn’t come to the Coronation. They categorically shouldn’t come,” Mellor told The Mail on Sunday. “They make money out of selling their family down the river.” Meanwhile, Iain Duncan Smith, a member of parliament, said, “If they dislike the Royal Family so much why would they attend the coronation?” Queen Consort Camilla will be crowned alongside her husband during the coronation ceremony in 2023. Buckingham Palace previously announced that Charles’ coronation “will reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry.” Following Charles’ ascension to the throne in September of 2022, Harry said in a statement, shared on his and Meghan’s Archewell website, “We now honour [sic] my father in his new role as King Charles III.” The day after Queen Elizabeth’s passing, Charles mentioned his youngest son Harry and daughter-in-law Meghan in his first speech as sovereign.
